Making Sashimi

Hi, have you ever wanted to make some Sashimi by yourself? If so, this is for you!
We designed "How to" instruction  in our Information Graphics class, and I chose "How to Clean a Sea Bass to Make Japanese Sashimi" as my subject :)
Here it is(click to zoom in):

Portraits

Hi, let me share my photographs!
I took Introduction to Digital Photography over at UC Berkeley in the summer 2009. It was so great to get to take a class at the world famous school. I met many cool people(I met Paige there, too) whom I still stay in touch with :)
Here are the works I did for one of the projects:

Since I was at a different school and different city, I decided to do something totally different, too. Urban portraits in Berkley! Most of my models don't smoke, but I made them look like they do :P It was such a fun project.

Check out my Flickr page here, too. There are some other pictures from the class, random pictures I took, and my old art works uploaded. Some are terrible now that I look at them.haha You might be impressed how much progress I made these days! :)

half way

Happy Thanksgiving!
I wanna share paintings I'm working on here. This time, I decided to try something new to me; cubism. This has been a challenge! I got stuck many times and was tempted to paint over in black. But I tried to be patient and now it's getting to look better.
Here they are:
Sorry for the quality, web cam was the only camera I have with me.
It's so good to be alone in this big studio :) It's the advantage you get when you work on holidays! I'll share good quality pictures of them once I get them done. Let's hope for the good results.

Pictograms

Hi, Happy Thanksgiving eve! :D
This year, since I'll be traveling a lot during the Christmas break, I decided to stay in Abilene for the whole Thanksgiving break. It seems boring, but nah, I'm so happy to have all this time to work on projects. yeah, I'm super nerdy.
One of the projects is for an illustration class, and I'm working on an ABC picture book. My subject is typefaces. (Again, I'm such a nerd!!) A for Arial, B for Bauhaus 93, C for Comic Sans(illustration for this would be fun), D for Desdemona... and so on. I will definitely share it here when I get it done!

Today, I will share pictogram I designed for an Information Graphics class. Here they are:
Can you tell what they are?
They are: Tsunami caution, Keep the volume down, Do not sit on, Watch out your way, Wet paint. This project was a lot harder than I expected at first!

Good Advice

The other day when I was looking through blogs, I found a great advice for art students and young designers. Like many others, I'm still not sure about what I should do after my graduation. There are so many things I want to do; I feel like becoming a designer, painter, illustrator, picture book writer, teacher, or translator. They all seem like fun and cool, and I don't know which one would be the best suit for me. Sometimes it's hard to know and pic what I love out of the things I like. Well, Jessica Hische said in one of her interviews,

‎"The work you find yourself doing while you're procrastinating is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life."

Wow, it struck me so hard. It's super simple, but I didn't realize at all until she said so. It's a good start point to look more into my career.

Here are some of her works:

Her website is here.

Fun at Mori Art Museum

Ok, I got to talk with my best friend, Paige, whom I mentioned in the first post and got "go" for posting our pictures!

Here they are:

Illusion art? ;)

Check her blog, too, it's great. She is from California and also an artist and a writer.
She keeps me being inspired all the time :) Having to know her has been such a highlight of my life!

Having Fun Illustrating

Hi :)
My illustration works:
These are some examples of what I do when I have some free time.
I only spent like 2 days each on the illustration, but long enough for practicing and having fun! :)
Ink on paper and colored on Photoshop.

Ugly Mug Coffee

Here is my design for packaging design class I'm taking this semester. The client is Ugly Mug Coffee. Their current design is bold and focused on typography. For my project, i decided to create a new products called "Aroma Coffee," that could be more illustration centered design. This "Aroma Coffee" is more for relaxing instead of for punching your face and waking you up. Now, their current fans can also have a relaxing time with their favorite coffee brand :)

Here is my solution(not yet revised for portfolio):
Photo taken by my professor, Nil.

Where the name came from

Ok, as one of the first posts, I think it would be cool to share the idea behind the name of this blog, "Fresh Soy."

Well, it might be straight forward if you already know that I'm a Japanese. I wanted to put my identity somehow in the title, and I thought soy would be the best. As you may know already, Japanese like to transform soy beans into many different food items: soy sauce, miso, tofu, natto... etc. I like these so much, and these are used a lot in Japanese food, so, pretty much my body was made up by soy! Also, as a young designer, I want to be like a soy bean that has so many possibilities of becoming something good. That's how I got the "Soy" part. The "Natural" part was kind of random. I couldn't think of something cool, so I did some brainstorming starting with the word "Salty." I liked "salty" a lot, but then I found out that many designers use it as their studio names, blog names, usernames and stuff. Then "creative" came up the second, but it was the same thing as "salty." It was a cliche. I got stuck there, so I surfed on thesaurus, and "fresh" came up. I sounds a little...hmm...well, I can't find the right word to describe it, "funny" might be a close word to how I feel. But it goes well with "soy," and it is always good to have a fresh mind, so I decided to go with "fresh."
This is how I got "Fresh Soy" for this blog :)

The first work to be shared here is, "Something Left, Something Taken" by Tiny Inventions.
Here is the link to the video.
"An animated dark comedy about a vacationing couple's encounter with a man they believe to be the Zodiac Killer."
It is such a cute and great film.  I hope you enjoy :)
This is one of their illustration works:

I love their style!

well, I wanted to include the whole movie within the blog but cannot figure out the way at the moment. Sorry about this. Can somebody give me a direction?
I still need to design logos and layout and everything for this blog too! It looks pretty bad right now. I'll get things set eventually :) Please be patient with me guys!

About Me

I have been a reader of many blogs related to art and design for a while and thought, "Why don't I start my own?" So, here I am, just set up an account. I will be using this blog to share my works and things I find inspiring. Feel free to leave your comment :)

Little bit about myself:
My name is Erika Ito, I'm studying Graphic Design at a university in Texas all the way from Tokyo, JAPAN! I love drawing, painting, and playing around on Photoshop and Illustrator. I admit that it's been quite a challenge to live in another country and to learn a new language plus the cultural differences... on top of all the school work(if you are a student or have been one, I'm sure you know how I feel). Though, I have learned a lot and got to meet great people here, and I have a confidence that this is one of the best choices I have made in my life. I bet my English sounds funny here and there... but you won't be so picky about it, right? I hope so!

Here is a picture of me taken by my best friend at Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. We had such a fun time being part of the exhibition there. I will share some of the pictures taken on the day in the future(but first, I need to check with her!).
If you have a chance to visit Japan, I highly recommend to visit the museum. They have great exhibitions all the time!
